Public Citizen (PC) has been a key player in the US social movement for nearly 35 years. Supported by more than 150,000 members, primarily throughout the United States, and strengthened by its long-lasting commitment to consumer protection, as well as democratic accountability in government and industry, PC benefits from strong national credibility. Public Citizen works to protect democracy, public health and consumer safety through Congressional and federal agency initiatives. Public Citizen also targets the Executive and the Judiciary branches to ban of dangerous medicines, to shut down nuclear plants, and to improve car safety.

Public Citizen has three offices in Washington, Texas and California and runs 6 programs, as follows:
- Congress Watch;
- Auto safety ;
- The Critical Mass Energy and Environment Program ;
- The Health Research Group ;
- The Litigation Group ;
- Global Trade Watch.

With the advancement of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the mid 1990s, Public Citizen has worked more internationally in order to tackle the disastrous consequences of economic globalization. The Global Trade Watch Program played an important role in raising awareness about the danger of the WTO and free trade. Public Citizen organized massive rallies during the WTO summits in Seattle in 2000 and in Cancun, Mexico, in 2003 to denounce the Global Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), the Agreement on Agriculture, and the opening of negotiation in the new issues... Moreover in 1999 the Critical Mass Energy and Environment Program launched a new campaign targeting not only the U.S., but also the global level, to tackle issues related to food, agriculture and trade.

Through these activities, Public Citizen has developed a wide alliance with groups around the word, including environmental protection organizations, associations advocating social justice, peasant organization and, of course, other consumer organizations. Public Citizen is an active member of global networks, including Our World Is Not For Sale, The Agri-Trade Network, and the coalitions against CAFTA, NAFTA and the FTAA, as well as supporting the North American and World Social Forums.

Public Citizen thus pursues at the international level its actions in favour of democracy, economic and social justice, health and environmental protection.
